Ford unveiled the 2025 Expedition in October, and now the automaker has introduced a specialized variant designed for police forces. The new model, known as the Expedition Special Service Vehicle (SSV), comes equipped with features tailored for law enforcement needs. While Ford has not disclosed extensive details, the vehicle is outfitted with a Setina Manufacturing push bumper, a slim light bar, and side steps to enhance its functionality for police work.
The introduction of the 2025 Expedition SSV coincides with Ford’s celebration of 75 years since launching its first police package. This original offering debuted on the Custom and paved the way for a wide range of law enforcement vehicles. Among the most iconic models is the Crown Victoria, a staple of police departments for decades. Ford’s lineup of police vehicles has also included the Bronco Special Purpose, Mustang Patrol, Police Interceptor Sedan, and Police Interceptor Utility. Recent additions like the F-150 Police Responder and F-150 Lightning Pro SSV further highlight Ford’s commitment to meeting the diverse needs of law enforcement agencies.
The Expedition SSV stands out with 18-inch wheels and a Split Gate at the rear. This feature allows the upper three-quarters of the tailgate to lift while the lower quarter folds down, creating a sturdy platform that can support up to 227 kilograms of gear. Inside, the vehicle retains much of the design found in the retail Expedition, including a 24-inch panoramic display paired with a separate touchscreen, likely measuring 13.2 inches. The center console has been reconfigured for police use, featuring unique switchgear, while the “Dark Car” mode ensures interior lights can be turned off entirely during stakeouts to help occupants remain inconspicuous.
The standard Expedition SSV is a two-row model with cloth seats and durable vinyl flooring, offering practicality and ease of maintenance. For agencies requiring more capacity, the Expedition Max SSV provides three rows of seating and an additional 300 millimeters of length, making it ideal for transporting personnel and equipment.
Under the hood, the Expedition SSV is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine delivering 400 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. This powertrain is mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission and comes with standard four-wheel drive. The vehicle’s robust towing capacity of 4,354 kilograms makes it particularly attractive to police forces with maritime divisions. Additional features include Pro-Trailer Hitch Assist, Pro-Trailer Backup Assist, and a Blind Spot Information System with Trailer Coverage. A suite of advanced driver-assistance technologies, such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Evasive Steering Assist, Post-Collision Braking, and Reverse Brake Assist, further enhances the Expedition SSV’s safety and performance capabilities.
