The GWM Cannon Alpha has set a new safety benchmark for hybrid dual-cab utes, achieving a maximum five-star rating from ANCAP. This achievement extends to both its diesel and hybrid engine options, demonstrating a high level of safety across the entire model range.
The Cannon Alpha's impressive safety performance is attributed to its comprehensive suite of active and passive safety features. These include seven airbags, a center airbag for enhanced protection, and advanced driver-assistance systems. The vehicle excelled in various crash test categories, particularly in child occupant protection, where it tied with the Tank 500 SUV for the highest score.
The Cannon Alpha's strong performance in adult occupant protection and vulnerable road user protection further solidifies its position as a safety leader. It received full points for driver and front passenger protection in side-impact and frontal-offset tests, as well as perfect scores for both child dummies in the second row.
The vehicle's advanced safety assist systems, including autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction awareness, and a fatigue-monitoring camera, contribute to its overall safety rating. The direct child detection system, which alerts the driver if a child is left unattended in the vehicle, is a notable feature.
ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg emphasized the significance of this achievement, highlighting the GWM Cannon Alpha as the first hybrid ute to achieve a five-star rating. She acknowledged the significant progress made by GWM in vehicle design and safety over the past decade.
While the five-star rating was obtained with the hybrid model, it applies to both the petrol-hybrid and diesel variants of the GWM Cannon Alpha. This demonstrates GWM's commitment to safety across its entire product range.
The updated ANCAP testing criteria, which aligns with Euro NCAP standards, places greater emphasis on advanced driver-assistance systems, autonomous emergency braking, and motorcycle safety. The GWM Cannon Alpha's outstanding performance in these areas underscores its commitment to safety and its ability to meet the evolving demands of modern vehicle safety standards.
