Introducing The 2024 Opel Grandland

Author: |

The brand-new 2024 Opel Grandland has made its debut, representing a significant departure from its predecessor. Scheduled to hit the market later this year as both an Opel across mainland Europe and a Vauxhall in the UK, the Grandland introduces a plethora of luxury features that position it uniquely in its segment.

New Opel Grandland

Available in both all-electric and combustion-powered variants, the Grandland offers a fresh perspective on compact crossovers for Europe, positioning itself above the recently introduced Frontera. The interior receives a comprehensive upgrade, featuring an expansive 16-inch infotainment screen, a heads-up display, and advanced seating options. These seats boast powered side bolsters, ventilation, and even a massaging function. Notably, the front seats feature a specific slot designed to alleviate pressure on the tailbone.

Constructed on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform, shared with the Peugeot 3008, the Grandland emphasizes versatility. Like its larger sibling, this platform can accommodate various powertrain and drivetrain layouts. Compared to the outgoing model, the new Grandland is significantly larger, gaining an additional 173 mm in overall length, 19 mm in height, and 64 mm in width. These enhancements result in the Grandland now measuring 4,650 mm long, 1,905 mm wide, and 1,660 mm tall, with a long wheelbase of 2,784 mm. Consequently, boot space increases by 36 liters, and rear-seat passengers benefit from an additional 20 mm of legroom compared to the outgoing generation.

In the electric versions, buyers can choose between a 73 kWh or a 98 kWh battery pack. Operating on a 400V architecture, these EVs can DC fast charge up to 160 kW, achieving an impressive range of up to 700 km. While details on the specific variants are not confirmed, it's anticipated that a base FWD version will be available at launch, with a dual-motor version expected later.

Additionally, a combustion version is in the pipeline, featuring a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine and a 48-volt mild hybrid system, with a plug-in hybrid variant offering around 50 miles of pure-electric range set to follow. Although Opel aims to transition to an EV-only brand by 2028, recent market trends may prompt a reevaluation of this strategy, making the hybrid option a potentially significant asset in the interim.

The latest Grandland comes equipped with a range of features aimed at enhancing its appeal to prospective buyers. These include a newly illuminated logo at the front, its distinctive ‘Vizor’ style front, Intelli-Lux Pixel Matrix HD lighting, a two-tone floating roof, and sharp wheel-arch feature lines.

While Opel has yet to confirm an official launch date, the Grandland is expected to be available for sale this fall. Additional information regarding the internal combustion engine (ICE) range and fuel efficiency is expected to be disclosed before then.
