Isuzu's 48V Mild-Hybrid Technology Debuts in Thailand

Isuzu is expanding its electrified vehicle lineup with the introduction of a new mild-hybrid diesel powertrain for its D-Max pickup and MU-X SUV models. This new powertrain, known as the RZ4F, is a 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine that produces 161 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Isuzu claims that this engine offers improved performance, fuel economy, and reduced noise levels compared to the previous non-electrified diesel options.

The mild-hybrid system employs a 48-volt electric motor and battery pack, which assists the diesel engine during acceleration and regenerative braking. This technology allows for a quicker response from the engine, especially at low speeds, and contributes to the overall efficiency of the vehicle. The mild-hybrid D-Max and MU-X are exclusively paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, further enhancing performance and fuel economy.

Isuzu has not disclosed specific details about the electric motor and battery capacity of the 48-volt system. However, the company has stated that the mild-hybrid powertrain offers a 56% increase in torque at startup and a 10% improvement in fuel economy compared to the non-electrified diesel models.

The mild-hybrid D-Max and MU-X will be available in Thailand starting November 28th, 2023. Pricing for the D-Max ranges from $17,200 to $27,000, while the MU-X starts at $34,435. Isuzu has not yet announced the availability of these electrified models in other markets, but it is expected that they will be introduced in other regions in the near future.

Isuzu's "multi-pathway" strategy for the future involves the development of various powertrain technologies, including combustion engines, battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). The fully electric D-Max, which is scheduled to launch in 2025, will be the company's first production EV. By offering a diverse range of powertrain options, Isuzu aims to meet the evolving needs of customers in different markets and regulatory environments.
