Jeep Gears Up for Off-Road Future with $60K Electric Recon

Jeep has an exciting slate of new models in development, with one of the most anticipated being the Jeep Recon, an all-electric off-road SUV expected to debut later this year. While the Jeep Compass is another upcoming model—though its availability in the U.S. market remains uncertain—the Recon is generating considerable enthusiasm among Jeep executives and fans alike.

In a recent conversation with Autocar, Kris Cholmondeley, Managing Director of Jeep UK, shared his enthusiasm for the Recon, calling it the model he is “most excited about” in Jeep’s upcoming lineup. He compared the upcoming Recon to the transformation seen in the Land Rover Defender, suggesting it will carry forward the rugged legacy of the Wrangler while incorporating more modern design and technology. Cholmondeley emphasized that the Recon will represent a fusion of tradition and innovation, stating that it will take “everything that’s enduring about the Wrangler and modernize it.” This strategy mirrors what Land Rover successfully accomplished by modernizing its iconic Defender.

What makes the Recon particularly significant is that it will be Jeep’s first purpose-built electric off-roader, even though the company already introduced its first EV, the Wagoneer S. While the Wagoneer S is an electric luxury SUV, the Recon aims to deliver serious off-road capability with zero emissions. Although a gasoline-powered variant hasn’t been ruled out for the future, Jeep is positioning the Recon as an electric trailblazer.

In terms of dimensions and capability, the Recon is expected to be similar in size to the Wrangler Unlimited, suggesting it will offer ample interior space and serious off-road performance. Key features may include large all-terrain tires, independent suspension, adjustable ride height, and electronic locking differentials—all crucial for tackling rugged terrain. These enhancements signal Jeep’s intention to keep the Recon true to the brand’s adventurous roots while embracing the future of electric mobility.

The Recon will be built on Stellantis’s STLA Large modular platform, which supports both 400-volt and 800-volt electrical systems. However, Jeep has not yet confirmed which voltage architecture the Recon will use. While the Wagoneer S boasts up to 600 horsepower, the Recon likely won’t offer that level of output, but it is still expected to deliver robust performance for off-road demands.

According to current projections, the Jeep Recon will launch before the end of the year and will be available in the U.S. market. Pricing is expected to start around $60,000, placing it in the premium electric SUV category. With its blend of off-road prowess and eco-conscious engineering, the Recon aims to redefine what an electric Jeep can be.
