For the time being, the Defender V8 is the most powerful production Defender in history, with a 5.0-liter supercharged engine generating 518 horsepower and 625 Nm of torque.
According to MotorTrend, the British firm is reportedly developing a hotter SVR variant to sit atop the Defender V8. That may seem strange given that the Defender is an off-road classic rather than a sports SUV, but Land Rover wants to have a genuine rival in the performance SUV category and capitalize on the high demand in that segment.
The Defender SVR's centerpiece will be the V8 engine under the hood, which is expected to be available for both the 90 and 110 variants.
The vehicle will almost certainly have a variant of BMW's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with more than 600 horsepower. Given that the non-SVR Defender V8 has a separate engine, you'll be able to pick between two distinct V8 powertrains in a Defender.
The ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission will be retuned to provide shorter shifts. Other performance enhancements for the Defender SVR include larger brakes and firmer suspension.
According to the source, the standard Defender 90 SVR would cost around $125,000, while the lengthier 130 variant will cost at least $130,000.
