Volkswagen has introduced the seventh generation of its popular Transporter and Caravelle vans, adding them to an already impressive lineup that includes the fully electric ID. Buzz and the Multivan T7. The newly launched Volkswagen Transporter T7, sharing its platform with the latest Ford Transit Custom, presents a diverse selection of powertrain options. Buyers can choose from turbodiesel, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric models, offering flexibility to meet different performance and environmental needs.
This new generation of the VW Transporter is available in several configurations, including light commercial vehicle (LCV) and passenger-focused versions. For those requiring extra room, the T7 offers options with a high roof and an extended wheelbase, making it ideal for transporting either additional cargo or more passengers. The van's dimensions vary depending on the specific model, with overall lengths ranging from 5,050 mm to 5,450 mm and wheelbases either 3,100 mm or 3,500 mm. This means the T7 is both longer and wider than its predecessor, increasing its maximum load capacity to between 5.8 and 9.0 cubic meters. The maximum payload capacity also sees an improvement, accommodating up to 1.33 tonnes, while towing capacity reaches 2.8 tonnes.
While the new Transporter and Caravelle share their platform and some body panels with the Ford Transit/Tourneo Custom, Volkswagen has made a conscious effort to differentiate their models with distinct styling features. The most notable design change is the updated front end, which blends elements from the Multivan and the ID. Buzz, giving the van a modern and recognizable appearance. Signature VW details include a flat beltline along the side windows and Amarok-inspired LED taillights with body-colored accents.
Inside the cabin, the interior borrows heavily from the Ford’s design, featuring a digital cockpit that includes a 12-inch instrument cluster and a 13-inch infotainment screen as standard. The dashboard and layout offer a range of practical storage options, adding convenience for drivers and passengers alike. In terms of trim, the Caravelle is showcased in the premium Style variant, which accommodates nine passengers, while the Transporter panel van is displayed in the rugged PanAmericana variant. The PanAmericana version features distinctive design elements such as painted bumpers, fenders, side moldings, and 19-inch Indianapolis alloy wheels. The interior also boasts premium touches, including illuminated stainless steel side steps, high-gloss black accents, and custom seat fabrics bearing the PanAmericana logo.
In terms of performance, Volkswagen claims that the T7 offers improved space, payload, towing capacity, and overall efficiency compared to the previous generation. The T6.1 was recently discontinued due to new cybersecurity regulations in the European Union, making way for the enhanced T7. Buyers have a choice of three turbodiesel engines, a 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid option, and three fully electric variants. The least powerful diesel produces 108 hp, while the electric version can generate up to 282 hp. Combustion engine models come standard with front-wheel drive, with an option for all-wheel drive on the more powerful diesel versions. The electric models feature rear-wheel drive, with the possibility of all-wheel drive expected in future releases.
The new Transporter and Caravelle made their debut at the IAA Transportation 2024 show in Hannover, where actor Jason Statham, famously known for his role in the "Transporter" movie series, was chosen as the campaign's spokesperson. In Germany, the Transporter T7 is now available for order, with pricing starting at €36,780 excluding VAT for the base diesel panel van, or €43,768.20 including VAT. Pricing for the Caravelle, focused more on passenger transport, has not yet been disclosed. Production of both models will take place in Turkey, alongside the Ford Transit/Tourneo Custom, further cementing the collaboration between Volkswagen and Ford on this project.
