Toyota has introduced a new special edition of its Corolla Hatchback exclusively for the U.S. market, named the FX Edition. This model is a tribute to the classic 1987 Corolla FX16, combining nostalgic design cues with modern aesthetics. While the FX Edition receives a handful of design enhancements both inside and out, it retains the same powertrain and chassis as the standard Corolla Hatchback. In essence, it adopts a sportier look without delivering any significant performance upgrades, making it more of a visual refresh than a mechanical evolution.
Following in the footsteps of the previously released FX sedan, the FX Hatchback brings its own unique flair. One of its most noticeable additions is a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, inspired by the Nightshade trim but finished in Gloss White for a rally-inspired appearance. Complementing these wheels are a black rear wing and a vintage-style Corolla badge on the tailgate, which lend the car a more distinctive and expressive identity. While it doesn’t carry the aggressive styling or body kit of the high-performance GR Corolla, the FX Edition does present a more refined and polished look overall.
In terms of exterior color choices, buyers are limited to three bold options: Ice Cap (white), Inferno (orange), and Blue Crush Metallic (blue). Inside the cabin, the theme continues with sporty yet understated detailing. The interior is fitted with black upholstery, highlighted by orange contrast stitching that appears on the dashboard, seats, door panels, and gear shifter. The seats themselves are upgraded to the Sport Touring variety, which includes more supportive bolsters, integrated headrests, and suede inserts to provide additional grip during cornering maneuvers.
The FX Edition is based on the Corolla Hatchback’s entry-level SE trim, meaning it includes a respectable level of technology, though it stops short of offering premium features. Standard equipment includes a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display—noticeably smaller than the 10.5-inch screen featured in the FX sedan. However, it does come equipped with wireless charging capabilities and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, ensuring essential safety and convenience features are present.
Mechanically, the FX Hatchback does not differ from the base SE model. It is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that drives the front wheels. While the engine is reliable and efficient, it doesn’t offer much in terms of excitement or driving thrill. The suspension and steering setup also remain unchanged, unlike the FX sedan, which benefited from a sportier configuration. This lack of performance enhancements might disappoint those hoping for a more engaging drive to match the FX’s athletic look.
The 2026 Corolla Hatchback FX is expected to arrive in U.S. dealerships in the fall of 2025. Production will be limited to just 1,600 units, adding to its appeal as a collector’s item. Pricing details have not yet been released, but considering the base 2025 Corolla Hatchback SE starts at \$23,780, the FX Edition is likely to command a slight premium.
