MG ES5 Introduced For Global Market

Author: |

SAIC-MG has unveiled a fresh electric SUV in China, the MG ES5. This model is poised to step into the shoes of the ZS EV in international markets such as Europe, the UK, and Australia. Sharing its EV-dedicated platform with the popular MG4 hatchback, the ES5 boasts a larger footprint and a more streamlined design compared to its predecessor.

The decision to introduce a new model rather than simply updating the ZS EV is a strategic move by MG. While the ZS received a new generation for 2025, it transitioned to a hybrid-only powertrain, abandoning the fully electric option. By launching the ES5, MG can leverage the latest advancements in its electric vehicle technology and offer a more competitive product.

The ES5 showcases a significant increase in size compared to the outgoing ZS EV. With a length of 4,476 mm, it is 162 mm longer, primarily due to an extended wheelbase of 2,730 mm. The SUV adopts a clean and modern design language, distinguishing itself from MG's ICE-powered models with its grille-less front fascia. The bumper intakes echo the sporty design of the MG Cyberster roadster, while the split LED headlights offer a more aggressive look. The side profile maintains a more conventional aesthetic, while the full-width taillights share a similar shape to those found on the MG4.

Inside, the ES5 provides a comfortable and tech-forward interior. A flat-bottom steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster, a large infotainment touchscreen, and a floating center console create a modern and driver-focused environment.

Under the hood, the ES5 shares the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) underpinnings with the MG4 hatchback. It is powered by a single electric motor located on the rear axle, producing 168 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. While it's unclear at this time if more powerful dual-motor versions will be offered in the future, the initial setup provides a solid foundation for a capable electric SUV.

In the Chinese market, the ES5 will be available with three options for the ultra-slim lithium iron phosphate battery pack, manufactured by the SAIC-CATL joint venture. The largest battery option, with a capacity of 62.2kWh, is expected to deliver a maximum range of 525 km under the CLTC protocols.

The MG ES5 is anticipated to make its debut in export markets in 2025. In Europe, it will face competition from other subcompact SUVs such as the Kia EV4 and the Peugeot E-2008. However, its larger size positions it more closely to models from the compact SUV segment, giving it a potential advantage in certain markets.
