Not long after revealing its revised LCV lineup for Europe, Toyota provided us with additional information regarding the upcoming Hilux mild hybrid. It's claimed that the first electrified iteration of the well-liked pickup will provide better performance and fuel economy.
The Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V is only offered as a dual cab, measuring 5,325 mm in length and 1,525 mm in length for the bed. Since Toyota didn't even bother to add a "mild-hybrid" emblem, there are no visible differences between this version and the non-electrified one. There will be other trim levels available, but the high-spec Invincible model is the one shown.
The new Multi-terrain Select system, which helps drivers handle challenging off-road conditions, is the standout feature inside. It has driving modes for rock, mud, sand, deep snow, and dirt. The electrification components of the mild hybrid Hilux are waterproof, allowing for a waving depth of 700 millimeters.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now wirelessly supported on the 8-inch infotainment system, and higher-end models can be controlled remotely with a smartphone. Not to mention, the JDM-spec Hilux served as an inspiration for the improvements made to the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite.
Modifications have been made to the 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel to enable the installation of a 48V system designed to meet professional requirements. A small lithium battery, mounted beneath the rear seats and weighing just 7.6 kg, is charged by a small electric motor/generator that is driven by a belt. The battery can provide the ICE with up to 16 horsepower and 65 Nm of torque when fully charged.
The diesel engine's 500 Nm and 203 horsepower are identical to those of the non-electrified Hilux. Improvements include a stronger belt material, an improved stop-start system, and a new two-arm belt tensioner. Toyota claims that the engine's environmental credentials are further enhanced by its compatibility with the non-fossil HVO100 diesel.
Toyota's electrified Hilux matches the standard model's 3,500 kg towing capacity and 1,000 kg payload capacity. Toyota did not release WLTP consumption figures, but it did confirm that electrification can improve fuel efficiency by 5%.
The Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V 2024 will be available in European dealerships in mid-2024. The electrified pickup will also make its debut in Australia in the first quarter of 2024.
