Subaru Unveils Details on New Crosstrek Hybrid

Subaru is gearing up to launch the Crosstrek Hybrid for the 2026 model year, marking a renewed attempt at offering a more fuel-efficient version of its popular compact SUV. Previous attempts, including a mild-hybrid in 2014 and a plug-in hybrid in 2019, failed to gain significant traction. However, the 2026 model promises to be different.

Subaru claims that the new Crosstrek Hybrid will deliver an impressive fuel economy figure of around 35 mpg combined, a significant improvement over the current non-hybrid model's fuel efficiency. This, combined with the vehicle's 16.6-gallon fuel tank, translates to a potential driving range of nearly 600 miles between fill-ups, significantly enhancing practicality for long journeys.

Powering the Crosstrek Hybrid is a series-parallel hybrid system that combines a 2.5-liter Atkinson/Miller-cycle four-cylinder engine with a small 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. This setup not only boosts fuel economy but also delivers a healthy 194 horsepower, a 12-horsepower increase over the current range-topping non-hybrid model.

Subaru is maintaining its commitment to genuine all-wheel drive, a key differentiator in this segment. Unlike many competitors that utilize electric motors to power the rear axle, the Crosstrek Hybrid retains a direct mechanical connection between the gasoline engine and all four wheels, ensuring robust off-road capability.

The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid will be equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) as the sole transmission option. Pricing and trim levels have yet to be announced, but it's expected to command a premium over the standard Crosstrek, which currently starts around $33,000.

Subaru is also introducing two new exterior paint colors, Sand Dune Pearl and Citron Yellow Pearl, exclusively for the Hybrid model, along with a set of stylish 18-inch dark gray alloy wheels. While the availability of features like the 11.6-inch infotainment system will vary across trim levels, the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid promises to be a compelling option for buyers seeking a balance of efficiency, performance, and all-weather capability.
