BYD has unveiled official images of its highly anticipated pickup truck, marking a significant milestone in the realm of electric vehicles. Positioned as a plug-in hybrid model, this truck rivals the size of the Toyota Hilux and is tailored for global markets, as reported by CarNewsChina.
The BYD pickup truck has been spotted numerous times on Chinese roads, prompting BYD to file for patents. Despite international glimpses into its interior, including a right-hand drive variant, BYD remained tight-lipped, offering no details about the model. However, the world's largest New Energy Vehicle (NEV) manufacturer has finally broken its silence, sharing the first batch of official images of the pickup truck.
Cloaked in heavy blue and orange camouflage, the BYD pickup truck boasts distinctive headlights with dual lenses, reminiscent of the numeral "8." Maintaining a robust design aesthetic, the truck features wide wheel arches, a commanding bonnet line, and generous side-view mirrors. Roof rails, a compact bed, and conventional door handles further underscore its utilitarian appeal.
Equipped with AT tires from Giti, the BYD pickup truck features a fuel door on the left rear fender and a charge port cover on the right. Its rear axle incorporates a multi-link independent suspension system, although precise dimensions remain undisclosed. However, BYD has revealed that the truck shares dimensions with the Toyota Hilux, measuring 5325 mm in length, 1855 mm in width, and 1815 mm in height, aligning closely with Geely's Radar RD6 electric truck designed for overseas markets.
As a plug-in hybrid, the BYD pickup truck boasts a combined range of approximately 1,000 km, with an electric range of around 100 km on a single charge. Notable features include an AR-HUD and an active suspension system.
Internally, the pickup truck resembles the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 (Leopard 5), boasting a sturdy gear selector and an array of physical buttons complemented by large monitors.
Designed for the global market, the BYD pickup truck addresses the restrictions faced by pickup trucks in China, which often deter Chinese buyers. Additionally, pickup trucks do not align with Chinese urban environments. Consequently, the main overseas markets for this vehicle include Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
With BYD gradually releasing information about the pickup truck, it is poised to receive a sales license from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) this month. There is also speculation that the model may make an appearance at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show, scheduled to commence in late April.
