BYD has officially launched its Atto 2 electric SUV in Europe, introducing two trim levels as it prepares for its market debut. This vehicle, known as the Yuan Up in its Chinese domestic market and other regions, has already seen considerable success, with cumulative sales in China reaching an impressive 134,839 units since its March 2023 launch. The Atto 2 is strategically positioned within BYD's European lineup, bridging the gap between the Dolphin hatchback and the larger Atto 3 crossover. It is built upon BYD's e-Platform 3.0 modular architecture, a dedicated platform for electric vehicles.
Despite its classification as a small SUV, the Atto 2 projects a robust and stylish appearance. Its design features a high bonnet line, accentuated by plastic cladding along the lower body panels, giving it a more rugged look. A distinctive design element is the use of blackened pillars, creating the popular floating roof aesthetic. European customers will have a choice of four exterior colors: green, gray, white, and black. The front fascia of the Atto 2 incorporates BYD's "Dragon Face" design language, characterized by sleek, narrow headlights. The rear of the vehicle features a unique taillight design, which BYD Europe describes as incorporating a "Möbius ring" symbol, intended to represent good fortune for the driver and passengers. The Atto 2's dimensions are 4310 mm in length, 1830 mm in width, and 1675 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2620 mm.
Inside the cabin, the Atto 2 boasts a contemporary design with a prominent, rotating 12.8-inch touchscreen display and an 8.8-inch LCD instrument cluster. BYD emphasizes the use of eco-friendly vegan leather for the seat upholstery. The front seats offer electronic adjustments and heating functionality. A large panoramic sunroof is another key feature, enhancing the sense of spaciousness within the cabin. The Atto 2 offers a practical trunk capacity of 400 liters, which can be expanded to 1,340 liters with the rear seats folded down, providing ample cargo space for a vehicle in its class.
The BYD Atto 2 is powered by a 45.12 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery pack. This battery supports DC fast charging at up to 65 kW, allowing for a 30% to 80% charge in a claimed 28 minutes. The 10% to 80% charging time is estimated at 37 minutes. The Atto 2 also supports AC charging up to 11 kW, a respectable rate for its segment. The battery powers a single electric motor producing 174 hp and 290 Nm of torque. This powertrain enables the Atto 2 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h. The Atto 2 has a claimed range of 312 km based on WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) testing.
In Europe, the BYD Atto 2 will be offered in two trim levels: Active and Boost. The entry-level Active trim includes R17 wheels, leather seats, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a rear-view camera, rear parking sensors, six speakers, and six airbags. The higher-spec Boost trim adds electrically folding side mirrors, a heated steering wheel, heated seats, ambient lighting, a cargo parcel shelf, the larger 12.8-inch touchscreen, and an upgraded eight-speaker sound system. The Boost trim also includes front parking sensors and a surround-view camera system for enhanced driver assistance. While the European pricing for the BYD Atto 2 has not yet been announced, the Yuan Up's price range in China (96,800 to 119,800 yuan, or approximately $13,280 to $16,430 USD) provides a potential indication of its market positioning.
