The Geely Icon, a compact SUV introduced by Geely in 2020, is built on the BMA platform shared by several other models such as the Geely Binyue, Proton X50, Geely Binrui, and Lynk & Co 06. By April 2024, the Geely Icon had achieved sales of 3,083 units, positioning it 22nd in the compact SUV market and 10th among Geely’s overall sales lineup.
One of the variants in this series, the Geely Icon Butterfly, known as Linglong in Chinese, is speculated to be an entry-level model with an anticipated price under $13,800. Presently, there are three models of the Geely Icon available, priced between $15,200 and $18,000. Geely has announced plans to release a new version of the vehicle in the near future.
At this stage, Geely has not disclosed the official specifications for the interior and powertrain of the new model. For comparison, the current Geely Icon features a cockpit outfitted with a 10.25-inch full LCD instrument panel, a 12.3-inch floating central control screen, and a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel. The current model is driven by a 1.5T four-cylinder engine delivering a maximum power of 178 hp and a peak torque of 290 Nm, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Its official WLTC comprehensive fuel consumption is rated at 6.3 liters per 100 kilometers.
The design philosophy of the Geely Icon Butterfly aligns closely with the existing models, though it introduces new exterior color options and configuration updates. One notable exterior design feature is the suspended roof, complemented by hidden door handles and 19-inch multi-spoke rims, which distinguish it from the conventional door handles of the current models. Geely is expected to offer the new model in three different versions with five exterior color choices. The front fascia maintains the established design, featuring a narrow rectangular grille with rounded corners, accented by thick chrome-plated trim. The vehicle’s dimensions remain consistent at 4350 mm in length, 1815 mm in width, 1620 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2640 mm.
This blend of familiar design elements and new updates reflects Geely’s strategy to innovate within a consistent brand identity while offering competitive features and pricing in the compact SUV segment. The anticipated release of the new Geely Icon variant signifies the brand's commitment to expanding its market presence and providing customers with modern, versatile options in the increasingly popular compact SUV category.
