In Europe, Volkswagen has initiated pre-sales of the reimagined Golf by unveiling the exclusive "Edition 50" model, commemorating half a century since the introduction of the original iteration of this iconic hatchback. While this special edition pays homage to the Golf's illustrious history, it also serves to divert attention from the escalated pricing of the updated lineup, now starting at €27,180.
The Golf Edition 50, built upon the prestigious Style trim, integrates numerous distinctive elements to honor this significant milestone. Noteworthy enhancements include "50" badges adorning the B-pillars, discreet "Edition 50" insignias on the side sills and steering wheel, along with exterior upgrades such as 18-inch Leeds alloy wheels, a LED strip on the grille, and tinted rear glass. Inside, touches like brushed stainless steel pedals and a black headliner elevate the model's appeal.
Standard features encompass the flagship 12.9-inch Discover infotainment system equipped with navigation, keyless access, the IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT integration, an anti-theft alarm, and driving profile selection. Enthusiasts can opt for the Plus package, incorporating a tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof, head-up display, and the impressive IQ Light matrix LED headlights.
In addition to the special edition, Volkswagen has unveiled the complete lineup for the series, comprising the base Golf, the mid-range Life, and the top-tier Style. The entry-level model comes with 15-inch steel wheels as standard, complemented by features like LED headlights and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility.
At launch, the powertrain options include the non-electrified 1.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI engines paired with a six-speed manual transmission, and the mild-hybrid 1.0 eTSI and 1.5 eTSI engines mated with a seven-speed DSG gearbox. While the 1.0-liter engines deliver 113 hp, the larger 1.5-liter engines produce 148 hp. However, the automatic mild hybrid variants benefit from enhanced efficiency and performance due to the 48 Volt system, alongside VTG turbocharger and Active Cylinder Management technologies.
Volkswagen has confirmed plans for "further derivatives and drive systems" in the future, including improved plug-in hybrids with a significant boost in zero-emission range, and the reintroduction of turbodiesel engines before their retirement. Additionally, the performance-oriented Golf GTI and the forthcoming Golf R are expected to be launched locally.
The facelifted VW Golf is currently available for pre-order across European markets. In Germany, prices start at €27,180 for the entry-level Golf Hatchback and €28,280 for the Golf Variant. This represents an increase in pricing compared to the pre-facelifted model, attributed to inflation rates and added features.
As for the high-spec VW Golf Edition 50, it starts from €36,820 due to its exclusive availability with the more potent 1.5-liter engines.
