As the automotive industry charges into a new year, BMW unveils a quartet of updates slated for its lineup, showcasing its commitment to innovation and electrification. Among the notable additions are new models in the i5 and 5-Series series, each bringing enhanced performance, efficiency, and cutting-edge technology.
First in line is the introduction of the i5 xDrive40, bridging the gap between the i5 eDrive40 and the high-performance i5 M60. Set to hit production lines in March, the i5 xDrive40 boasts a dual-motor configuration at the front and rear axles, generating a robust 389 horsepower and 590 Newton-meters of torque. This places it strategically between the base i5 eDrive40 and the top-tier i5 M60, promising a dynamic driving experience. Accelerating from 0 to 96 km/h in just 5.2 seconds, the i5 xDrive40 strikes a balance, offering a quicker pace than its single-motor counterpart and a captivating performance slightly below the highest-performance model.
While BMW has yet to disclose the precise range of the i5 xDrive40, it is anticipated to fall between the i5 M60's 412 km and the i5 eDrive40's 475 km. The model is equipped with an 84.3 kWh battery pack capable of rapid charging at speeds of up to 205 kW at DC fast-charging stations. Notably, it can achieve a 10 to 80 percent state of charge in just 30 minutes, emphasizing the brand's commitment to efficient electric mobility. Prices for the i5 xDrive40 are set to start at $71,109, including a $995 destination charge.
Looking ahead, BMW has plans to unveil the plug-in hybrid variant of the new 5-Series, the 550e xDrive PHEV. Expected to commence production in July, this model showcases a powertrain anchored by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and an integrated electric motor within its eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The combined output of 483 horsepower and 700 Newton-meters of torque ensures a spirited performance. Sending power to all four wheels, the 550e xDrive PHEV accelerates from 0 to 96 km/h in a swift 4.0 seconds, attaining a top speed of 250 km/h.
Anticipated to offer an electric-only range of approximately 48 km and a top electric speed of 140 km/h, the 550e xDrive PHEV promises a harmonious blend of electrified efficiency and dynamic driving capabilities. BMW plans to unveil more details, including pricing, a precise range estimate, and additional specifications closer to the model's production launch in July, building anticipation for a compelling addition to the evolving BMW lineup.
