BMW has issued a recall for approximately 1,000 new 5-Series and 7-Series models in the United States due to a potential issue with the steering spindle.
The recall affects specific models of the 2024-2025 5-Series and 7-Series, including the 530i xDrive, 540i xDrive, i5 eDrive40, i5 xDrive40, i5 M60, 740i xDrive, 760i xDrive, 750e xDrive, i7 eDrive50, i7 xDrive60, and i7 M70.
The issue stems from concerns about the specifications of the steering spindle's double universal joint. BMW believes that in certain steering maneuvers, the swivel socket could become damaged. If this occurs, it may require more effort from the driver to steer the car, increasing the risk of a crash.
The recall was initiated after BMW discovered a damaged steering spindle at one of its assembly plants. Following an investigation, additional damaged spindles were found, leading to the decision to issue a recall.
While BMW is not aware of any warranty claims, customer complaints, or accidents related to this issue, the recall is being issued as a precautionary measure.
Dealers will be notified of the recall on September 25, and owners will receive notification by First Class mail from November 15. Authorized BMW centers will be instructed to replace the steering spindle's double universal joint free of charge.
