Daihatsu Unveils Ultra-Rare Rocky Limited Edition

Owning something that few others can have often sparks excitement—whether it’s an ultra-expensive hypercar or a much more affordable yet equally rare model. With that idea in mind, Daihatsu has introduced a unique offering for the Indonesian market: the Rocky Limited Edition. This compact SUV will be produced in an extremely small batch just 10 units reserved for specially selected buyers.

The vehicle made its debut at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), where it is exclusively available for order during the event. Its design draws inspiration from the Daihatsu Rocky Crossfield Concept, showcased at the same exhibition the previous year. Like the concept, the production model carries rugged styling cues such as exposed black bumpers, a distinctive front grille featuring the Daihatsu name in bold lettering, and 16-inch black alloy wheels. Together, these details give the SUV a no-nonsense, adventurous appearance.

However, there are some changes from the earlier concept. The Rocky Limited Edition sports an “Energetic Orange” paint job contrasted with black touches on the roof, mirror caps, wheel arch claddings, and bumpers. Unlike the Crossfield, it lacks off-road-focused accessories like heavy-duty tires and a roof rack, although buyers can easily install similar upgrades through the aftermarket.

Inside, most elements remain consistent with the standard Rocky, though certain trim pieces such as the steering wheel, center console, gear knob, climate control vents, and door handles have been given a sleek black finish. Based on a mid-range specification, the model includes a 7-inch infotainment screen, a fully digital instrument cluster, fabric seats, and dual airbags as standard.

In terms of performance, the Limited Edition offers no mechanical alterations from the version on which it is based. Power comes from a naturally aspirated 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine producing 87 horsepower and 113 Nm of torque, coupled to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) driving the front wheels. This setup is particularly popular in Indonesia, with the 1.2X CVT variant making up about two-thirds of Rocky sales in the country. While some enthusiasts might prefer the 97-horsepower 1.0-liter turbocharged engine and available all-wheel drive offered in Japan, this model sticks to the tried-and-true local favorite. There’s also a hybrid Rocky on sale in Indonesia, adapted from a version first launched in Japan in late 2021.

The price tag for the Rocky Limited Edition is roughly $15,100 only about $260 higher than the equivalent regular trim. For that small premium, owners secure a vehicle with rarity on par with some high-end exotics, at least in production numbers. Those interested must act quickly, as Daihatsu will only take orders during GIIAS, running from July 24 to August 3, before all 10 examples find their new homes.
