Ford Ranger PHEV Revealed At IAA

At the 2024 IAA Transportation event in Hannover, Ford revealed the plug-in hybrid version of its Ranger midsize truck, precisely one year after the model's electrified variant was initially announced. Known as the Ranger PHEV, this new model maintains the robust capabilities of its non-electrified counterparts, such as impressive towing capacity, payload, and off-road performance. However, the PHEV variant brings the added advantage of a zero-emission driving mode, which contributes to the truck's overall environmental friendliness. Another distinctive feature of this model is its exclusive Stormtrak trim, available only with the PHEV version.

In terms of design, the Ranger PHEV looks nearly identical to the traditional Ranger models, with only minor differences to highlight its hybrid nature. The most noticeable visual change is the addition of a charging port, which is located near the fuel cap on the rear fender. Despite this subtle distinction, Ford has introduced a limited-edition Stormtrak launch model that is exclusive to the PHEV variant. This special edition features a range of unique styling details and comes equipped with a variety of premium features. Key highlights of the Stormtrak edition include a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels, a grille with a honeycomb pattern, a set of decals, and redesigned side gills that feature "PHEV" badging. This version of the pickup comes painted in a unique Chill Grey color exclusive to the Stormtrak edition, though buyers can also opt for Agate Black. Additionally, standard equipment includes Matrix LED headlights and Ford’s Flexible Rack System, which enhances the vehicle’s utility.

The interior of the Ranger PHEV has been upgraded with high-quality materials for a more premium feel. It also features a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and a 360-degree camera, all integrated into a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The powertrain of the Ranger PHEV combines a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with an electric motor generating 101 hp, housed in the transmission bellhousing. Together, this setup delivers 275 hp and 690 Nm of torque, making it more powerful than the gasoline and diesel versions of the Ranger. The PHEV includes an 11.8 kWh battery, providing an estimated electric-only range of 45 kilometers. Ford claims the battery can be fully charged in under four hours, and the system also supports regenerative braking. Additionally, the PHEV comes with an enhanced Pro Power Onboard system, which allows users to power tools or electronic devices with either the standard 2.3 kW or an optional 6.9 kW power output. Power is distributed to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission and an e-4WD system, which includes a dual-range transfer case and a rear differential lock. Ford engineers also adjusted the suspension to accommodate the different weight distribution of the hybrid model. Despite these changes, the PHEV retains the 1-ton payload capacity and the ability to tow up to 3,500 kilograms, consistent with its non-hybrid counterparts.

The Ford Ranger PHEV will be manufactured at Ford’s Silverton plant in South Africa. In addition to being available in Europe, the PHEV model is set to launch in Australia and New Zealand, with deliveries expected to begin in the spring of 2025. Pricing details are expected to be released closer to the market launch.
