Kia Recalls Over 74,000 Sorento

Blackout packages have become increasingly popular in the automotive world, but Kia seems to have taken the concept a bit too far. The automaker is now issuing a recall for 74,469 Sorento vehicles due to a potential issue that could lead to the loss of both head- and taillights. This poses a significant safety risk as it can increase the likelihood of accidents, especially when driving at night or in poor visibility conditions. Additionally, the affected models do not meet federal safety standards for lighting, which further emphasizes the severity of the issue.

According to Kia’s safety recall report, the vehicles in question are equipped with a Body Domain Control Unit (BDCU) that contains a “software logic error.” Under specific circumstances, this error could cause the headlights and taillights to momentarily stop functioning. The problem first came to light when Kia North America was alerted by its counterparts in South Korea. In Kia’s home market, the same issue was observed in Sorento models, where certain exterior and interior lights could stop working while the vehicle was being driven. This led the company to initiate a recall in South Korea, which eventually prompted a closer examination of vehicles sold in North America.

Kia North America reviewed its records and found no reported cases of this issue in the United States. However, the company chose to proceed with a recall out of an abundance of caution. The recall affects several versions of the Sorento, including the 2024 and 2025 models, as well as the 2025 Sorento Hybrid and 2025 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid. Owners of these vehicles can expect to receive official notification about the recall next month. Once notified, they will be able to take their vehicles to a Kia dealership, where technicians will update the BDCU software at no cost to the customer.

This recall highlights the importance of addressing potential safety concerns proactively, even when no incidents have been reported. By acting swiftly, Kia is taking steps to ensure the safety of its customers and maintain compliance with federal regulations. While the prospect of losing head- and taillights while driving is undoubtedly alarming, the company’s decision to implement a recall and offer a free software update is a reassuring move.
