As the landscape for startups venturing into the electric vehicle (EV) market becomes increasingly challenging, survival requires substantial commitments, and Mullen boldly steps into the arena with the Five RS—a high-performance iteration of its crossover, unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
While EVs boasting impressive performance figures are not entirely novel, the audacity of an electric crossover promising such power is noteworthy. The Five RS, equipped with dual motors positioned at the front and rear axles, claims an astonishing 1,000 horsepower and over 1,151 Newton-meters of torque, propelling it from 0 to 96 km/h in under two seconds. Remarkably, Mullen asserts that this electric marvel can achieve a top speed of 322 km/h or potentially even higher, facilitated by a Porsche Taycan-inspired two-speed gearbox and an innovative aerodynamic configuration.
The exterior design of the Five RS showcases distinctive elements, including a prominent rear wing, a spoiler meeting the body at the rear window, and a unique duct at the front. Unlike traditional supercars with vents forming a double-layer hood, the RS's inlets create an intriguing grille-like pattern, offering a captivating and aesthetically pleasing solution.
To ensure consistent acceleration, Mullen introduces an "ultra-performance race-track" mode, optimizing throttle mapping, powertrain settings, battery cooling, dampers, and steering feel for an unparalleled driving experience. Halting this powerhouse is entrusted to six-piston Brembo brakes at the front and four-piston calipers at the back, gripping carbon ceramic discs. The RS rolls on high-performance 21-inch rear and 20-inch front wheels, boasting a 33-meter stopping distance from 100 km/h.
Measuring 4,902 mm in length, 2,032 mm in width, 1,626 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,946 mm and a ground clearance of 170 mm, the Five RS exudes a commanding presence. Its 100 kWh battery pack targets a range of 483 km per charge, and its 800V architecture facilitates an 80 percent charge in approximately 20 minutes.
In terms of technology, the Five RS incorporates an integrated infotainment system, an AI-based personal assistant named Persona, facial recognition technology, and level 2+ driver assistance features. Drivers will engage with these innovations from premium Nubuck leather and Alcantara trimmed seats with carbon fiber backs. With lightweight carbon fiber also present in the door inserts, the Five RS is anticipated to weigh in at 2,300 kg.
Mullen aims to commence production of the Five RS in late 2025, with sales slated to begin in mid-2026.
