New Li Auto i8 Challenges Tesla With 720 km Range

Chinese automaker Li Auto has pulled the wraps off its latest model, the all-electric i8 SUV, with prices starting at 321,800 yuan just under $45,000. While the use of the “i8” name might raise eyebrows at BMW headquarters, Li Auto’s new offering is poised to give traditional automakers some serious competition in the EV space.

In terms of styling, the Li Auto i8 takes on a distinctive form that blends characteristics of both SUVs and minivans. It borrows design cues from the company’s L9 SUV as well as its flagship Mega minivan, creating a unique visual identity. One of the most striking elements is its unconventional front fascia: rather than placing the LED light bar near the bumper like many modern EVs, Li Auto has positioned a full-width light strip directly beneath the windshield, giving the vehicle an unmistakable signature. The roofline flows smoothly towards the rear, emphasizing aerodynamics, while the back end adopts a more familiar look with its own light bar and large tailgate. Company executives say the design draws inspiration from luxury yachts, though the connection may not be obvious at first glance.

Under the skin, the entry-level variant comes equipped with a 90.1 kWh NMC battery powering two electric motors for a combined 536 horsepower and 660 Nm of torque. This setup is said to deliver up to 670 km of range on the lenient CLTC test cycle. A larger 97.8 kWh NMC battery is also available, increasing the claimed range to 720 km and enabling ultra-fast charging enough to add 500 km of range in only 10 minutes. Helping achieve these numbers is an impressively low drag coefficient of 0.218, even better than the Tesla Model Y’s 0.220. Performance is equally strong, with a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 4.5 seconds, while energy consumption sits between 14.6 and 14.8 kWh per 100 km similar to the smaller Tesla Model 3.

Inside, the i8’s cabin is packed with high-end technology and modern comforts. The SUV will be offered exclusively as a six-seater in a 2+2+2 configuration, prioritizing space and comfort for all passengers. Instead of a traditional instrument cluster, a compact display is mounted at the center of the steering wheel, while two massive 15.7-inch screens dominate the dashboard for infotainment and vehicle controls. Other standout features include cooled wireless charging pads and Li Auto’s Magic Carpet air suspension, which offers four selectable ride heights for different driving conditions. On the tech and safety front, every model comes standard with the Li AD Pro advanced driver-assistance suite, while top trims upgrade to the Li AD Max system—both of which feature LiDAR integration for enhanced autonomous capabilities.
