Recent disclosures from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have shed further light on Nio's forthcoming Firefly EV, revealing crucial details about its battery and range capabilities. The vehicle is confirmed to utilize a 42.1 kWh battery pack, delivering a CLTC-rated range of 420 kilometers, achieving an efficiency of 10 kilometers per kWh. The MIIT's periodic release of vehicle declaration catalogs, which include technical specifications of upcoming models, provides valuable insights into the burgeoning electric vehicle landscape. The latest catalog features the Firefly EV under the "New Energy Vehicle Models Exempt from Vehicle Purchase Tax" section, specifically within the pure battery electric vehicle category.
Mirroring Nio's established approach, the Firefly will incorporate battery swapping technology, enabling users to conveniently swap, charge, and upgrade their batteries. According to previous MIIT filings, the battery pack is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit supplied by Sunwoda, marking a new partnership for Nio.
In terms of dimensions, the Firefly measures 4003 mm in length, 1781 mm in width, and 1557 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2615 mm. Nio has emphasized the vehicle's focus on energy efficiency, highlighting its lightweight, low-drag wheels and custom-designed low-rolling-resistance tires. Furthermore, the Firefly's electric drive efficiency, battery energy density, high and low-voltage management systems, and comprehensive thermal management strategy are all engineered to optimize energy consumption.
The Firefly will be powered by a rear-wheel-drive motor with a maximum power output of 105 kW. Its design incorporates a near 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution and a rear-wheel-drive motor layout, enhancing traction and handling. The interior of the Firefly has been revealed to feature a modern and minimalist design, including a floating full LCD instrument panel and central control screen, a dual-spoke multifunction steering wheel, and a center console devoid of physical buttons, opting for a column-mounted gear shifter.
Regarding practicality, the Firefly boasts a 92-liter front trunk, claimed to be the largest in its class, offering layered storage and a built-in drainage function. When the rear seats are folded down, the vehicle provides a flat cargo space exceeding 1,250 liters. The Firefly is designed to meet stringent safety standards, including the latest C-NCAP and Euro NCAP five-star ratings, and features a class-leading nine airbags as standard equipment.
Firefly CEO Daniel Jin has articulated the brand's global aspirations, positioning the Firefly as a globally competitive electric vehicle. The model is set to compete with established brands such as BMW's Mini and the Smart joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, with a more accessible starting price point. The brand plans to enter the European market in the second quarter of 2025, followed by expansions into Latin America and Southeast Asia. The Firefly has been available for pre-sale since the previous Nio Day, with a pre-sale price of $20,400, and is scheduled for an official launch in April of this year.
