Capitalizing on this burgeoning trend, Kalmar Automotive has unveiled its own interpretation of a rugged 911, the RS-7. Based on the 997 generation model, this vehicle has undergone a comprehensive transformation, receiving a multitude of modifications designed to enhance its off-road capabilities and overall performance.
Kalmar's decision to utilize the 997 generation 911 as the foundation for the RS-7 stems from a practical consideration. Porsche 911s produced after the 997 generation employ complex chassis designs, incorporating bonded aluminum and steel components. According to Jan Kalmar, this construction method presents challenges for a safari-ready vehicle, where ease of repair is paramount. He emphasizes that a true off-road vehicle should be easily repairable with basic tools like a hammer and a welder. The 997 generation, being the last 911 model to feature a full steel chassis, aligns perfectly with this philosophy, offering a robust and easily serviceable platform for the RS-7's rugged purpose.
The modifications to the RS-7 begin with a comprehensive overhaul of the bodywork. The most noticeable changes include the addition of flared fenders at both the front and rear, providing increased wheel clearance and a more aggressive stance. A distinctive ducktail spoiler adds a touch of classic 911 styling while also potentially contributing to improved aerodynamics. At the front, a new light pod housing four large rally lights has been integrated, significantly enhancing visibility in challenging conditions. The vehicle rides on new wheels fitted with Michelin off-road tires, specifically chosen to tackle the most demanding terrains.

The vehicle now features fully active TracTive dampers, which offer both adaptive damping and hydraulic ride height adjustment. The interior of the RS-7 has also been thoughtfully upgraded. New Recaro CS Sportster seats provide enhanced comfort and support, essential for both on-road driving and off-road excursions. To minimize weight and enhance performance, the original audio system has been removed. In its place, a new display has been integrated into the center console, providing the driver with real-time information and allowing for on-the-fly adjustments to the suspension settings.
