While the MG booth at the Goodwood Festival of Speed might be bustling with excitement over the Cyber GTS Concept. The new MG HS is here, and it's packing a serious punch. The all-new, second-generation HS has made its debut with a sharper design, more spacious interior, and an upgraded plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system that boasts impressive electric-only capabilities.
Though MG doesn’t explicitly highlight it, the new HS heavily draws its design and engineering from the third-generation Roewe RX5, which is already a familiar face in the Chinese market. This connection is evident in the shared bodywork and window lines, along with similar lighting units. However, the MG HS manages to carve out its own identity with a distinct front bumper that features a unique grille and more aggressive air intakes.
Measuring between 4,655 and 4,670 millimeters in length and 1,890 millimeters in width, the new MG HS slots itself neatly between the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V in terms of size. Additionally, the new generation has a wheelbase of 2,765 millimeters, which is 45 millimeters longer than the previous model.
Inside, the new HS boasts a roomier cabin that comfortably seats five and offers a 507-liter boot space. The dashboard is a tech enthusiast’s dream, featuring dual 12.3-inch displays. The center console is home to a modern ‘shuttle-style’ gear shifter, adding a touch of futuristic flair. Depending on the trim level, buyers can expect a range of standard features, including a wireless charging pad, an 8-speaker audio system, a 360-degree camera, and the MG Pilot ADAS package for advanced driver assistance.
When it comes to powertrain options, the MG HS provides both gasoline and PHEV variants. The PHEV model, in particular, has seen significant enhancements. It pairs a 1.5-liter engine that produces 141 horsepower with a more robust electric motor that generates 207 horsepower. This setup allows the MG HS to sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 6.8 seconds. The larger 24.7 kWh battery pack offers an impressive all-electric range of up to 121 kilometers. For those who prefer traditional gasoline engines, the entry-level model features a non-electrified turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that delivers 168 horsepower and 275 Nm of torque. This engine can be matched with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, driving the front wheels.
Price-wise, the MG HS is positioned competitively. The internal combustion engine (ICE) version starts at $32,187, while the PHEV variant begins at $40,557. Enthusiasts in the UK can already place their orders for this new compact SUV, with initial deliveries expected to commence by the end of July.
In summary, while the Cyber GTS Concept might be stealing the spotlight, the new MG HS is quietly making waves with its enhanced features, competitive pricing, and impressive performance. It's a strong contender in the compact SUV market, ready to meet the needs of modern drivers.
