Volkswagen Tharu XR Is A New Addition to China's SUV Lineup

Chinese consumers enjoy the most extensive selection of Volkswagen SUVs in the world, a lineup that continues to grow with the introduction of new models. The latest addition is the Tharu XR, an SUV developed by the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture, designed to fit snugly between the slightly smaller T-Cross and the larger Tharu.

The initial announcement of the Tharu XR came from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Following this, SAIC Volkswagen released official photos and detailed information about the Tharu XR, ahead of its launch in the Chinese market.

The exterior design of the Tharu XR bears a strong resemblance to other Volkswagen SUVs. The designers at Volkswagen made no effort to disguise its similarity to models like the VW T-Cross, as well as the VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq twins from India. This shared design includes a sculpted character line running along the profile of the vehicle.

However, the Tharu XR does have some distinct features that set it apart from its relatives. The front end has been completely redesigned, taking styling cues from the larger Tiguan L Pro. This includes sharp LED headlights and large bumper intakes, giving the Tharu XR a bold and aggressive look. At the rear, the vehicle is longer than the other models, and it features unique taillights with a smoked finish. Customers can choose between two configurations, one with black accents and another with chrome accents around the body.

In terms of size, the VW Tharu XR measures 4,355 mm in length, 1,762 mm in width, and 1,605 mm in height. It shares a wheelbase of 2,651 mm with the Chinese-spec T-Cross and the Indian-spec Taigun, both of which are built on the same MQB A0 platform. For comparison, the standard VW Tharu, also manufactured locally by SAIC, is 103 mm longer and has a wheelbase that is 29 mm longer than the Tharu XR.

Under the hood, the Tharu XR offers two gasoline engine options, both with a 1.5-liter displacement. The more powerful turbocharged version produces 158 hp and 250 Nm of torque, likely paired with a DSG automatic transmission, sending power to the front wheels.

SAIC Volkswagen will provide more details about the Tharu XR in the near future. When it becomes available in China, the Tharu XR is expected to be priced higher than the T-Cross, which starts at ¥115,900 (approximately $16K), but below the Tharu, which starts at ¥158,600 (approximately $22K).

In summary, the Tharu XR is a new addition to Volkswagen’s already extensive SUV lineup in China, offering a blend of familiar design elements and unique features, positioned to attract customers looking for something between the T-Cross and Tharu.
