SAIC’s MG brand has introduced the MG ES5, a new electric crossover, to the Chinese market, with a starting price of $16,300. However, with various discounts and subsidies, the entry-level model can be purchased for as low as $13,950.
The ES5 embodies MG’s latest design language, showcasing sharp LED daytime running lights and an aggressive front bumper. While the closed front end, wide wheel arches with plastic cladding, and a curved hoodline contribute to a somewhat bulky appearance, the overall design is still striking. The crossover measures 4,476 mm in length, 1,849 mm in width, and 1,621 mm in height, with a 2,730 mm wheelbase. It rides on either 17-inch or 18-inch wheels.
Inside, the ES5 adopts a minimalist approach, featuring a large 15.6-inch floating touchscreen, a 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster, and a gear shifter mounted behind the D-shaped steering wheel. The center console houses a wireless charging pad and cup holders. The base model comes with a four-speaker audio system, while higher trims offer a six-speaker setup.
Powering the ES5 are two CATL LFP battery options: a 40.1 kWh unit and a 62.2 kWh unit. A 168-horsepower synchronous permanent magnet electric motor drives the rear wheels, propelling the crossover from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 to 7.9 seconds, depending on the battery configuration. The CLTC-rated range is 425 to 525 kilometers.
One of the highlights of the ES5 is its remarkably low center of gravity, which measures just 530 mm. This achievement is attributed to the world’s slimmest battery pack, with a height of only 110 mm. The lower center of gravity enhances the vehicle’s handling dynamics, complemented by a 50:50 weight distribution. The ES5 employs a McPherson strut suspension at the front and a five-link independent suspension at the rear.
MG has faced relatively sluggish sales in China recently. From January to September 2024, domestic sales reached 56,511 units, representing a 20.2% year-over-year decline and a significant 81.3% drop compared to the same period in 2022. The brand is now looking to revitalize its sales performance with the introduction of new models like the ES5.
To stimulate demand, MG has implemented a creative pricing strategy for the Chinese market. The suggested retail price for the ES5 has been announced, along with a limited-time discount of $1,400 for all trim levels. Additionally, a 10,000 yuan trade-in subsidy is available, resulting in a total discount of $2,800 for Chinese buyers.
