Great Wall Motor has officially introduced the updated versions of its Tank 500 series—the Hi4-T and Hi4-Z plug-in hybrid off-road SUVs. These refreshed models come with enhancements in exterior styling, interior comfort, and advanced driving assistance systems. GWM plans to begin pre-sales for these new models in August.
In the Chinese market, the current starting prices for the Tank 500 Hi4-T and Hi4-Z are approximately $46,800 and $50,900, respectively. From January to June 2025, GWM successfully sold a total of 21,344 units of the Tank 500 series, reflecting strong interest in this premium hybrid SUV line.
The overall body structure of the new Tank 500 remains largely consistent with the existing design, though minor updates have been made. A reworked front grille gives it a slightly refreshed look, while a newly added “GWM” emblem is now featured at the rear. The SUV’s dimensions—5,078 mm in length, 1,934 mm in width, and 1,905 mm in height—are unchanged, as is the 2,850 mm wheelbase. It maintains robust off-road capabilities with a 29-degree approach angle, 24-degree departure angle, and a minimum ground clearance of 210 mm. Additionally, customers can opt for a towing package, allowing the vehicle to tow up to 2,500 kilograms.
A standout feature of this upgrade is the inclusion of a Hesai ATX lidar unit mounted on the roof, accompanied by new cameras integrated into the front fenders and rear spoiler. These support GWM’s third-generation “Coffee Pilot Ultra” intelligent driving system, offering enhanced semi-autonomous driving functionality. However, it's unclear whether the lidar system will be standard or optional. A new paint option, Dunhuang Green, joins the existing palette, which includes Kunlun Gold, Pamir Silver, and Mount Everest White.
Inside the cabin, the Tank 500 retains its 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.6-inch central touchscreen powered by the Coffee OS 3 infotainment system. A paddle shifter has been added behind the steering wheel, and a 50-watt refrigerator—capable of cooling or heating between -6°C and 50°C—is now built into the center console. Rear-seat passengers are treated to a 17.3-inch 3K-resolution overhead entertainment screen that supports various control inputs, including voice commands, gestures, touchscreen interaction, and smartphone control. Seating is upgraded with Nappa leather upholstery featuring both heating and ventilation. The rear seats recline between 25° and 35°, and the cargo space maxes out at 1,489 liters.
Under the hood, the powertrains are unchanged. The Hi4-T model combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine (248 hp) with an electric motor via a 9-speed hybrid transmission, offering a combined output of 402 hp and a 37.1 kWh battery enabling 110 km of electric-only range. The more powerful Hi4-Z uses the same engine paired with dual electric motors and a 3-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), delivering an impressive 865 hp and an electric-only range of 201 km, thanks to its 59.05 kWh battery.
