Kodiak Robotics has seized the spotlight at CES by introducing what it claims to be the "world's first driverless-ready semi-truck designed for scaled deployment." Now in its sixth generation, the semi-truck incorporates reliability improvements and features the latest iteration of the Kodiak Driver system. Notably, the SensorPods have been upgraded with two higher-resolution automotive-grade LiDAR sensors and two additional side radar sensors, enhancing long-range object detection. With these enhancements, the model now boasts a total of 12 cameras, four LiDAR sensors, and six radar sensors.
The revamped SensorPods are equipped with "extra-bright" hazard lights, designed to adhere to the autonomous trucking industry's application for an exemption to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Regulation 392.22. This regulation typically requires traditional truck drivers to place warning devices on the roadway after a breakdown. Recognizing the absence of a human driver to deploy road flares or warning signs, Kodiak aims to make the hazard lights exceptionally eye-catching.
In addition to visual safety features, the semi-truck incorporates microphones that actively listen for emergency vehicles and identify "suspicious sounds" indicating potential hazards. The model boasts a multitude of redundant safety systems, including LTE communication links and a braking system with three individual actuators. Furthermore, Kodiak has implemented a dual-redundant steering system, a redundant power system, and a safety computer capable of guiding the truck to a safe "fallback" position out of traffic flow in the rare event of a critical system failure.
Scheduled to hit the road later this year, the driverless-ready semi-truck will operate on the route between Dallas and Houston. This deployment marks an extension of Kodiak's extensive real-world testing experience, accumulating over five years and covering more than 4 million kilometers with 5,000 loads transported. Kodiak Robotics continues to push the boundaries of autonomous trucking, introducing innovations that signify a significant leap forward in the pursuit of safe and efficient driverless transportation.
