SAIC Unveils Electric Pickup Truck in Germany

SAIC, a leading Chinese automotive manufacturer, has made a significant move into the European electric vehicle market with the launch of its new Maxus eTerron 9 pickup truck at the IAA Hanover Auto Show in Germany. This strategic move aligns with the brand's ambitious expansion plan, which aims to introduce ten new models by the end of 2025, solidifying its global presence.

The eTerron 9 represents the production version of the groundbreaking GST pickup truck concept unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show last year. This concept vehicle, designed with an adventurous lifestyle in mind, showcased innovative features such as a built-in drone compartment and space for mountain bikes, emphasizing its suitability for outdoor pursuits.

While the concept vehicle was initially referred to as "GST," the underlying platform has been officially named "Interstellar GST." The Hanover Auto Show marks the first public appearance of the production-ready truck, which will be known as the Maxus eTerron 9 for export markets. Interestingly, the vehicle will be marketed as the Interstellar X within the Chinese domestic market, as revealed by recent filings with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The Maxus eTerron 9 holds the distinction of being the first medium to large-sized all-electric pickup truck from a Chinese brand to enter global export markets. According to MIIT data, the Interstellar X boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 5500mm in length, 2005mm in width, and 1860mm in height, with a substantial 3300mm wheelbase. Powering this electric behemoth is a robust dual-motor setup, delivering 138 kW to the front axle and a substantial 216 kW to the rear, promising impressive performance and off-road capabilities. While the concept vehicle showcased an integrated drone compartment, the production version retains the spacious frunk, providing ample storage space for adventure gear.

SAIC has achieved significant success in the global pickup truck market, with cumulative export sales of Maxus-branded trucks surpassing 180,000 units. Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Americas have been key markets for these vehicles, contributing to over 90% of total export sales. In China, the Maxus brand offers a diverse portfolio, encompassing SUVs, MPVs, and commercial vehicles, many of which are also exported to international markets. Notably, Maxus pickup trucks are rebadged under the MG name in the Thai market, further expanding the brand's reach and influence.

The launch of the Maxus eTerron 9 signifies a crucial step for SAIC in its global expansion strategy. This innovative electric pickup truck is poised to disrupt the market with its advanced technology, impressive performance, and robust capabilities, solidifying SAIC's position as a major player in the burgeoning electric vehicle landscape.
