The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has recently unveiled specifications for Seres' updated Aito M9 SUV, revealing both extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) and fully electric vehicle (EV) variants. This highly anticipated release provides a comprehensive look at the vehicle's dimensions, powertrain options, and technological advancements.
The new Aito M9 measures 5230mm in length, 1999mm in width, and 1800mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3110mm. Its approach and departure angles are 18° and 20°, respectively, suggesting a balance between on-road comfort and light off-road capability. The vehicle offers a range of tire options, including 265/45R21, 285/45R21, 265/40R22, and 285/40R22, allowing buyers to customize their vehicle's performance and aesthetics.
The all-electric (EV) versions of the Aito M9 come in three different curb weights: 2610 kg, 2655 kg, and 2680 kg. All EV variants boast a towing capacity of 1500 kg. The powertrain consists of dual electric motors supplied by Huawei. The front motor, model YS210XYA03, delivers 215 horsepower, while the rear motor, model TZ210XYA03, generates 308 horsepower. These motors are powered by ternary lithium battery packs provided by CATL, a leading battery manufacturer.
The extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants also offer three curb weight options: 2650 kg, 2690 kg, and 2715 kg, with a similar towing capacity of 1500 kg. The EREV powertrain combines a 154 horsepower engine (model HG15T) acting as a range extender with two electric motors. The front electric motor produces 221 horsepower, while the rear electric motor offers 268 horsepower. Like the EV versions, the EREV models also utilize ternary lithium battery packs from CATL. Interestingly, the MIIT listing reveals two WLTC (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Cycle) fuel consumption figures for the EREV: 0.62L/100km and 0.64L/100km, suggesting potential variations in battery or powertrain tuning.
Visually, the new Aito M9 largely retains the design language of the current model, with subtle refinements and updates. A significant upgrade is the inclusion of four lidar sensors strategically placed around the vehicle: one at the front, one at the rear, and two on the sides. This configuration strongly indicates that the new Aito M9 is being prepared for Huawei's Qiankun ADS 4.0 advanced driving system. For comparison, the current Aito M9 is equipped with a 192-line lidar and Huawei's Qiankun ADS 3.0. The addition of more lidars suggests a further enhanced autonomous driving capability.
The Aito M9 has enjoyed considerable success in the Chinese market.
In January, the Aito M9 series achieved impressive sales of 12,483 vehicles, securing its position as the top-selling luxury car priced above 500,000 yuan ($68,600) for the tenth consecutive month, according to official statements. Since deliveries began in February 2024, cumulative orders for the Aito M9 have surpassed 200,000 units within the first year, demonstrating strong consumer demand. Official data further highlights the Aito brand's impressive performance, ranking sixth in sales among luxury vehicle brands in China between January 20th and February 16th of this year. These figures underscore the Aito M9's popularity and its significant presence in the competitive Chinese automotive landscape.
