The Chinese automotive market is gearing up for the arrival of a new contender in the luxury sedan segment. SAIC-Audi, the joint venture between the German automaker Audi and its Chinese partner SAIC, has revealed key specifications for the upcoming Audi A5L, a stretched four-door sedan. This vehicle, poised to replace the A4L in China, is slated for its market debut in mid-2025 and is generating considerable anticipation, particularly due to its adoption of the latest fifth-generation EA888 engine. Notably, the A5L's wheelbase measures just 2 mm shorter than that of the Audi A6 C8, hinting at the generous interior space it offers.
The Audi A5L made its initial public appearance at the Guangzhou Auto Show 2024 held last November. The vehicle showcased at the event was a pre-production version, giving a glimpse into the design and features of the model scheduled for launch in mid-2025. On February 19th, SAIC-Audi took a significant step towards bringing the A5L to market by applying for a sales license for the mass-produced version, signaling its readiness for production and sale.
The A5L distinguishes itself with a sleek and elegant profile, characterized by a long, gracefully curved bonnet, a sloping roofline, and a low beltline. Sculpted fenders contribute to the vehicle's wide and assertive stance. At the rear, the A5L features distinctive LED taillight units and a subtle ducktail spoiler, adding a touch of sportiness to its overall design. It's important to note a key distinction between the Chinese market A5L and the A5 available in global markets: the Chinese variant adopts a more traditional sedan configuration with a conventional trunk lid, rather than the sportback tailgate found on the global A5. The front fascia of the new model aligns with Audi's signature design language, featuring a large, prominent grille and sharp LED headlights, creating a recognizable and contemporary look. Adding to its modern appeal, the A5L is equipped with electric door handles. Audi will offer the A5L with three different front and rear bumper variations, allowing for some degree of personalization.
Dimensionally, the Audi A5L measures 4903 mm in length, 1883 mm in width, and 1427 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2922 mm. This makes the China-made sedan 74 mm longer, 23 mm wider, and 17 mm lower than its global counterpart. The SAIC-Audi-produced A5L will be available with wheel options in 18, 19, and 20-inch sizes. Its approach and departure angles are 13 and 14 degrees, respectively. The front-wheel-drive version of the Audi A5L has a curb weight of 1810 kg, while the all-wheel-drive variant weighs in at 1875 kg.
Under the hood, the Audi A5L houses the DXF 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, manufactured by SAIC-Volkswagen Power Battery. This engine represents the fifth generation of the EA888 series and boasts a peak power output of 201 horsepower. It also incorporates a 48V belt starter generator, contributing to improved efficiency. While information regarding the gearbox is currently unavailable, the Audi A5L comes standard with front-wheel drive and a top speed of 240 km/h. The all-wheel-drive variant, slightly heavier, achieves a top speed of 238 km/h. The unveiling of the A5L has generated considerable excitement in the Chinese automotive market, and its arrival in 2025 is eagerly awaited.
