The Mazda MX-5, a perennial favorite among driving enthusiasts, continues to stand out as a rare example of an affordable and engaging sports car. This beloved roadster is poised to become even more alluring with the forthcoming production launch of the Mazda Spirit Racing variant, a model that generated significant excitement when previewed at the Tokyo Auto Salon last month.
In recent years, key competitors such as Toyota and Hyundai have successfully invigorated their lineups with the introduction of their respective performance divisions, Gazoo Racing and N. Mazda, historically known for its Mazdaspeed in-house performance division, which was phased out over a decade ago, is now marking its return to the performance car segment with the launch of Mazda Spirit Racing. This new division effectively serves as the spiritual successor to Mazdaspeed, signaling Mazda's renewed commitment to delivering high-performance vehicles. The Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 will be the first model under this new performance brand.
According to reports from BestCarWeb, the production version of the Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 is slated to debut in November, and it is expected to closely resemble the concept showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon. This limited-edition model, with a production run of just 200 units, will initially be exclusive to the Japanese market. This exclusivity represents a significant disappointment for MX-5 enthusiasts outside of Japan. However, the potential for wider availability remains, contingent upon sufficient global demand. If enough interest is shown in other markets, Mazda may consider expanding its availability.
The Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 distinguishes itself from the standard MX-5 through a series of visual enhancements that amplify its sporty character. These include a new front splitter and sleek side skirts, contributing to a more aggressive stance. The vehicle is also equipped with new six-spoke black Rays TE37 wheels, which provide a striking contrast to the bright red brake calipers. Black badges and black stickers further accentuate the vehicle's sporty aesthetic. The interior features Recaro seats, four-point harnesses, and red contrast stitching, creating a driver-focused and performance-oriented cabin.
Beyond the visual enhancements, the Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 incorporates significant mechanical upgrades. The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine has been enhanced with new camshafts, pistons, exhaust manifold, and a new cylinder head, resulting in an increased power output of 197 horsepower and improved torque figures compared to the standard model. To further enhance handling dynamics, the vehicle is equipped with Bilstein dampers, new underbody stiffening, and specialized tires. These upgrades are expected to significantly improve the roadster's handling capabilities, a welcome development for discerning drivers seeking an even more engaging driving experience. This new model shows Mazda is serious about re-entering the performance market.
