Rivian Recalls R1 Models for Headlight Fix

Author: |

Rivian, renowned for its uniquely designed headlights that serve as a hallmark of its brand identity, has encountered a significant issue with its 2025 R1 models. Specifically, the low beam headlights on certain vehicles are failing to function correctly in cold weather conditions, compromising their fundamental purpose of providing adequate visibility for drivers. This malfunction has necessitated a recall of over 17,000 R1T trucks and R1S SUVs.

The core of the problem lies in the low beam headlights' inability to activate when drivers attempt to start their electric vehicles in cold temperatures. This issue manifests as one or more of the low beam lights failing to illuminate. To alert drivers to this malfunction, Rivian has implemented an on-screen notification that reads, "Low beam mights not working. Service low beams soon." This proactive alert system ensures that drivers are immediately aware of the issue, rather than relying on external cues such as being flashed by oncoming traffic.

Rivian's investigation has traced the root cause of the headlight malfunction to incorrectly configured parts supplied during the manufacturing process. These faulty components were installed in vehicles produced between April 29, 2024, and February 3, 2025. To rectify this issue, Rivian will need to replace the headlamp control modules in a total of 17,260 electric vehicles. This repair is not a simple over-the-air software update; it requires physical intervention by Rivian technicians, necessitating a visit to a service center or a mobile technician appointment.

While Rivian is expanding its service network, it currently has fewer service centers compared to established automakers like Mercedes or BMW. As of the latest count, Rivian operates approximately 60 service centers across North America. However, the company is actively working to increase this number, aiming to have over 100 service centers by the end of 2025. Recognizing the potential inconvenience for customers who cannot easily access a service center, Rivian also offers mobile technician services, enabling qualified personnel to travel to customers' locations to address vehicle issues.

This is not the first time Rivian has faced challenges with its headlights. In June 2024, the company issued a recall for certain R1T and R1S models due to headlight level errors. In that instance, the headlights were aimed slightly too low, potentially resulting in insufficient road illumination.

The current headlight malfunction poses both an inconvenience and a potential safety hazard. Although Rivian has stated that it has not received any reports of accidents related to this specific issue, malfunctioning headlights can significantly impair a driver's ability to see and be seen, particularly in low-light conditions. Furthermore, the malfunction renders the affected vehicles non-compliant with FMVSS 108, the section of U.S. law that governs vehicle lamps. This non-compliance underscores the seriousness of the issue and the necessity for a prompt and effective resolution.
